WHITE MONKEY KING by Sally Hovey Wriggins

Introduction:

There once was a monk who traveled four thousand miles across the Gobi Desert and over three ranges of some of the highest mountains in the world on his way from China to India. He did it in the seventh century (600’s A.D.). In the sixteenth century a man named Wu Ch’eng-en wove these legends into a long novel, which he called “Journey to the West.” In this famous story, part myth, part fantasy, the monk is accompanied on his journey by a monkey.

In “White Monkey King,” I have retold only the first part of the story, in which the mischievous monkey acquires god-like powers and creates havoc in heaven. A sequel, “Monkey King Goes West,” will describe the journey of monk and monkey to India.
