Enuma Elish, a Babylonian Epic

Retold By: Emily T.

In the beginning, when only sea and sky existed, Father Apsu and Mother Tiamat ruled the sweet and salt waters. Apsu personified the sweet waters, and Tiamat personified the salt waters. Mummu, their son, also existed in the mist that covered them.

The other existing gods were Anshar and Kishar, parents of Anu, god of the heavens. And soon, the father of Ea. Ea became the god of the earth, and he had no rival among the great gods.

Everyday, the younger gods would get together and play. They were very rowdy; this made Mother Tiamat angry. She began to hate how they acted, but didn't know how to deal with them. So she went to Apsu, the ruler of the sweet waters, for help.

"I need your help, Apsu and Mummu!" she cried. "I cannot sleep nor can I get just a little peace and quiet! Let us destroy them to stop their raucous activities!"

Apsu agreed. "Yes, I cannot stand their behavior! Destroy them!"

Mummu also agreed. Then, they began to make their evil plan.

"For I will make wind, to help you destroy them!" called Anu, god of the heavens.

"Yes!" said Apsu. "That shall make the waves crash upon them!"

So it was. They had a plan to destroy the younger gods.

Meanwhile, Ea had found Damkina, his wife. He had told her about the evil plan that Apsu, Mummu, and Tiamat were planning to do. He decided to make a big circle, a magic circle, to protect the younger gods from their plan. So he placed the young gods inside and went to Apsu.

When He arrived to Apsu, he then put a spell on him, a spell that would make him sleep and never awake. Then, Ea killed Apsu(while he was under his spell) and took his crown to become the new ruler.

When Ea had killed Apsu, and led Mummu by the nose, he went to Damkina and said, "My dear Damkina! I have killed Apsu and led Mummu by the nose. For now I am ruler of the sweet waters!"

But what Ea didn't know, was that there was still Tiamat.

Ea and Damkina then had a son, which they called Marduk. Their son was very special, for he had four eyes, four ears, and fire shot out from his mouth when he spoke. "Ea," Damkina said. "Our son is the Sun-God!"

When, Tiamat heard that Apsu was dead, she wanted avenge. She went to Kingu. Kingu was a special person as well as Marduk. He agreed with Tiamat to make monsters, eleven of them, to fight against Marduk.

"We will face him," said Tiamat. "With our eleven monsters to defeat him!"

The first creature was a dragon, a great big dragon, then cam a sphinx, lion, centaur, viper, a mad dog, demons, and finally a dragonfly.

When Marduk found out about Tiamat and her eleven monsters, he said, "But Tiamat is only a woman. Call an assembly of the gods and proclaim my supreme destiny."

To prove himself, Marduk, he must make his garment disappear and reappear. So he yelled in front of the gods, "Disappear!" and it did. The gods were amazed. Then he yelled "Reappear!" and it did. Then the gods said, "You are now king of the entire universe!"

Then, when the gods went to Kingu, they placed the Tablet of Destiny on him, making him now the leader of Tiamat and the eleven monsters.

When the time came for Marduk to fight, he made himself into a creature much more powerful than Tiamat's monsters. First, in his first hand, he put an arrow with a bow. Then, in his second hand, he put a net. In his third hand, he held a plant. This plant, however, was an anti-poison plant. Finally, in his fourth hand, he held a .

His body was covered in a layer of fire. Lighting was striking above his head, and a halo, a big bright halo was shining above his head also.

Marduk, like Tiamat, had created four creatures. First was the Destroyer, then Relentless, Tramper, then Flier. He was ready to fight.and win.

When Kingu saw the great body of Marduk, he was terrified. So was Tiamat, but she was ready also. Marduk attacked first. He sent hurricanes, cyclones, and rainstorms toward Tiamat and Kingu. Then, he shot an arrow at Tiamat, splitting her heart into, and killing her. He took Kingsu and the other prisoners into cells and locked them up. He took the eleven monsters and turned them to stone.

Marduk stood over Tiamat's body. He then made the sky and Earth. Out of her eyes, he created the lighting. Our of her saliva, he made the clouds and the rain. And finally, out of the rest of her body, he made the mountains, trees, and bushes on the Earth.

When Marduk returned to the gods, he said, "May we build a temple, in honor of my battle."

So with help from the gods, they build it, and he placed the stone monsters on the wall and said, "You see! This is what will happen to you if you betray others!"

So Marduk lived at his temple, which he called Babylon, which meant the house of the gods. When Marduk saw Kingsu's dead body, he created what we call today man out of his blood.

What Marduk created then, still exists today, in our world, Earth. For we will always remember Marduk as the Great Creator, or the Everlasting King.
