Spartacus
Retold by Nicolas C.

Spartacus grew up with his mother and he was the only son. When he was 13 he was sold to the Romans as a slave. He grew up that way doing hard labor. When ever some one would hit him he wouldn’t just stand there like an idiot and let himself be hit again; he would fight back. One day he put up a big fight, but since there was so many Roman soldiers, he lost. The Romans, since Spartacus had been causing so much trouble, decided that they should put Spartacus to death.

There was a Roman gladiator dealer passing by where Spartacus was going to be put to death. When the Roman saw the size of Spartacus and saw how muscular his body was, he wanted to buy him. The Roman gladiator dealer did so and took Spartacus to be trained at a camp. When Spartacus started his training he found out that he was the best gladiator in the school.

One day Sapartacus met a young beautiful woman whose name was Varinia, and they both fell in love with each other. The next day a Roman governor came to visit the school because he wanted to see some competition and some fight to the death. The Roman chose Spartacus to fight with another gladiator. They got in the arena and had a long battle, but finally the other gladiator put his spear to Spartacus’ throat and was just about to kill him, but suddenly he backed away and threw his spear at the Roman governor. He started running so he could get out of the arena, but before he could, one of the guards had already killed him. Spartacus’ life had been saved.

The next day Spartacus went into the cafeteria and one of the gladiator trainers provoked Spartacus into a fight, so Spartacus killed the gladiator trainer. The rest of all the gladiators made a revolt against the guards, and they killed them all and they escaped from the school.

Spartacus became the leader of all the gladiators. Spartacus made a plan to free all the slaves in Italy so they would have an army so they could fight with Rome.

Soon the Roman senate heard that the gladiators had escaped and that they were destroying towns. The Roman senate was furious; they decided that they would have to send a army to destroy them. The Roman army was sent but while they were camping at night the slave army with Spartacus came and killed the whole camp. The next day Spartacus met with an Arabian prince and Spartacus talked about buying 500 ships from him so the whole slave army could get out of Italy and be free. The Arabian prince made a deal with him. The ships would be ready in 7 months at the coast of Italy.

The next day the slave army started to head for the coast. On their way Spartacus met with Varinia. She told him that she had escaped too. The slave army had a very difficult journey. They went over snowy mountains and over dry deserts, until they reached the coast of Italy. The same day that they reached Italy, the Arabian prince came to talk to Spartacus.

He told Spartacus that the men that were making the ships for them had betrayed them. He also told him that the whole Roman army was trying to corner their army by the sea so they could die. The next day the slave army went marching to fight with the Roman army.

Finally they met at the battle field and they started fighting. The war was long and hard, but finally the Roman army won. The Romans also made the people that survived into slaves, and they told them that nobody would be crucified if they told them and showed them Spartacus. But instead of the slaves betraying Spartacus, they were saying that each of them was Spartacus. The Roman commanders got mad and decided to crucify all the slaves along a road.

The Roman general was walking on the battle field when he heard a baby crying. He found a woman and a child, which turned out to be Spartacus’ wife, and she had just had a son. The Roman commander decided to have Varinia as his wife in his house.

All the slaves were crucified along a road. But the Roman commander decided to crucify Spartacus and one of Spartacus’ friends last. That night he had Spartacus fight with his friend to the death. Spartacus didn’t want to kill his friend, but he did it any way because the winner would be crucified.

Spartacus was crucified and was dying on a cross. The general that had Varinia in his house had many enemies, and one of them was the leader of the senate. The leader of the senate decided to free Varinia and let her live free. He freed Varinia, and since the governor in a short time would discover what he had done, he killed himself.

At last Varinia was free. When she was leaving Rome she saw her husband dying on the cross and she spoke to him. “Spartacus, at last your dream has come true. I am no longer a slave and neither is your son. I will tell our child who his father was and of the great deeds that he did. Good-bye Spartacus,” and with that Varinia left.
